How to Write a Software Engineer Resume

As a software engineering manager, I review a lot of resumes. Here's what makes a software engineer resume stand out.

As a software engineering manager, I have the opportunity to review a lot of resumes during my day-to-day responsibilities as I hire for software engineering positions on my team. This article is to help you write a software engineer resume that will get you noticed by the hiring manager!

What makes a good software engineer resume?

  1. Provide a relevant summary. Summarize your software engineering skills and work experience that highlights your skillset relevant to the job you are applying for. Customize your resume to demonstrate the skills described in the job listing.

  2. Show examples of your skills in action. Provide examples of how you have used the skills mentioned in the job description. This may include a project that you worked on that demonstrates your experience using that skill.

  3. Use results-based work experience. Describe your accomplishments with measurable outcomes. Show the hiring manager your ability to add value to their company.

  4. Include unique differentiators. Include interesting unique skills such as a world language like Chinese or French. This can set you apart from other candidates they are reviewing.

  5. Link your GitHub profile. Be sure to include a link to your GitHub profile so that you can showcase your work and demonstrate your coding activity.
