Lessons Learned Reading The Alchemist

My reflections on Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist — personal legacy, love, and following your personal legend.

I recently read The Alchemist and really enjoyed it. I wanted to capture my thoughts on the book.

⚠️ Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Becoming the Wind: Santiago had to let go of himself to become the wind. I can let go of my bad habits so I can become the wind to achieve my goals. Transformation requires surrender before it requires effort.

Personal Legacy: I love the idea of a personal legacy — especially the word itself. The Merriam-Webster English dictionary defines legacy as “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past.” As you consider the lessons you want to pass on when you’re older, it becomes quite the philosophical exercise.

Love: Finding someone who loves you enough to let you explore and figure out your personal legacy is important. In many ways, that is what happens when a soldier has a loved one at home when they go to war. If you find someone who is ready to support you in that capacity, you have truly found someone spectacular.

Melchizedek: In life we all need someone like Melchizedek who would push you to go after your goals. Surround yourself with people who have life experience and who can help point you in the right direction — parents, grandparents, mentors, friends.

I enjoyed reading The Alchemist because it reminded me of myself. We are all on this journey called life. Let’s help the people we come in contact with during this time on earth.
